Frequently Asked Questions

On Urban Fantasy, Druid Fantasy & the Druidverse

Welcome to the official FAQ for M.D. Massey, bestselling author of the Colin McCool saga, a long-running urban fantasy series rooted in Celtic mythology, modern druidry, and supernatural adventure.

If you’ve got a question about the Druidverse, there’s a good chance it’s answered below.

Book Releases & Formats

When will the audiobook (Audible) version release?

For my urban fantasy and druid fantasy novels, the audiobook edition typically releases 4–6 weeks after the Kindle and print editions.

Producing a high-quality fantasy audiobook takes time — narration, editing, mastering, and Audible’s approval process all factor in. I work to ensure the audio experience matches the quality of the print and ebook versions.

Is it crucial to read the Colin McCool series in order?

That depends on how you like to experience epic, character-driven urban fantasy series.

Most of my books are written in trilogies or tetralogies, each functioning as a contained story arc within the larger Druidverse. You can jump into a specific arc and still enjoy the story.

However:

  • If you enjoy long-term character evolution, start at the beginning.
  • If you’re a completionist, publication order offers the richest experience.
  • If you prefer contained arcs, you can begin with the first book of a trilogy.

Because the Druidverse is a shared universe grounded in Celtic mythology and modern druid lore, connections deepen the further you go.

Will you continue writing books in [Series X]?

I continue writing the urban fantasy series that readers are most excited about.

If you visit my Amazon author page, the series Amazon highlights first are generally the strongest performers — and those are usually the worlds I continue exploring.

That said, storytelling isn’t purely algorithmic.

Sometimes a corner of the Druidverse — whether it’s epic druid fantasy, alternate timeline Celtic fantasy, or supernatural thriller — calls me back. When the muse insists, I listen.

Is Colin McCool and the Vampire Dwarf the original YA version of Druid Blood?

Yes.

Written in 2012, that early edition predates the broader evolution of the Colin McCool saga into a full-fledged Celtic urban fantasy series.

If you have a copy, hold onto it — it’s part of the early history of the Druidverse.

Publishing & Production

Why does it take time for urban fantasy audiobooks to release?

Audiobook production involves:

  • Professional narration
  • Audio engineering
  • Editing and mastering
  • Platform approval

Even after submission, Audible’s review process takes time. My goal is to release the audiobook edition of each new Colin McCool urban fantasy novel within 4–6 weeks of print publication.

Colin McCool & the Druidverse

Is character X from (Book A) the same as character Xa from (Book B)?

All Druidverse novels exist within the same shared multiverse.

If you encounter alternate timeline versions of characters, they are the same core individual — but shaped by different life threads.

This structure allows me to:

  • Explore alternate mythic outcomes
  • Shift subgenres within urban fantasy
  • Experiment with tone while remaining rooted in Celtic cosmology

At its core, the Druidverse is a shared universe urban fantasy built on Celtic mythological foundations, and alternate timelines expand those possibilities.

Is Colin ever going to settle down with one of his romantic partners?

Colin is effectively in his early twenties — emotionally college-aged, even if he’s battled gods and eldritch horrors.

Right now, he’s still growing into his role as a druid master.

Will he eventually settle down? Possibly.

But long-running character-driven urban fantasy requires authentic growth. Colin’s journey through Celtic magic, divine politics, and supernatural warfare has to unfold naturally.

AI & Creative Process

Do you use AI in your books and covers?

No.

Every novel in the Colin McCool saga — from mythological research to druidic spellcraft to supernatural worldbuilding — is written by me.

If you'd like a deeper explanation of my philosophy on storytelling and AI in genre fiction, you can read:

For me, urban fantasy grounded in Celtic mythology is a human craft — built on lived experience, research, and long-form narrative planning.

Are your books derivative of [Author X]?

No.

All of my Celtic urban fantasy and druid fantasy novels are original works. They draw on authentic mythological sources, Irish folklore, and my own long-term story architecture.

That said, genre fiction operates through tropes — and tropes define reader expectations.

Understanding tropes is part of understanding how modern druid fantasy fits within the broader urban fantasy landscape.

Writing & Submissions

Will you read my work-in-progress, fan fiction, or book report?

I’m honored you’d ask.

However, due to time constraints and legal considerations, I cannot read unpublished manuscripts, fan fiction, or school assignments.

Writing a long-running urban fantasy series rooted in Celtic mythology requires a full-time commitment. My schedule is devoted to producing the next book in the Druidverse.

If you’re writing your own fantasy novel — keep going. Consistency beats inspiration every time.

Druidverse Worldbuilding

Are all your books connected?

If they’re part of the Druidverse, yes.

The Druidverse includes:

  • The Colin McCool saga
  • The Trickster Cycle
  • The Sylvan Cycle
  • The Shadow Changeling series
  • The CERBERUS series
  • The Superhero World novels
  • My THEM Post-Apocalyptic series
  • The Junkyard Druid short stories and novellas
  • The forthcoming Druid Apprentice series
  • Any spin-offs I write featuring Druidverse characters

While some stories lean more epic, some more supernatural thriller, and others more traditional urban fantasy, they all share the same mythological framework.

What should I read first?

If you’re new to my work and enjoy:

  • Modern druids
  • Celtic mythology
  • Snarky first-person urban fantasy
  • Supernatural action and mythic stakes

Start with Junkyard Druid, the first book in the Colin McCool saga.

It’s the foundation of the Druidverse and the gateway into my brand of Celtic urban fantasy.
