A Day In The Life Of An Urban Fantasy Author

Ever wonder what an author’s typical workday is like? Here’s a (somewhat fictionalized) day in the life of an urban fantasy author:

3:00 am – Brain thinks it’s morning already. Wide awake with ideas for the current work in progress spinning around in my head.

7:00 am – Coffee… must have coffee…

7:05 am – Gah, brain fog. What the hell was that idea I had at 3:00 am?

7:30 am – *Takes a look at email inbox* “Yup, I’m gonna ignore that.”

8:00 am – I should be at my writing desk already. Hey look, kittehs!

9:00 am – Time to write!

9:05 am – But first, I have to research the genealogy of the Celtic pantheon… again.

9:45 am – I don’t know what kind of monster feeds their cat weed, but I’m glad they filmed it and posted it online.

10:00 am – Time to write… really!

10:30 am – I need tacos.

11:00 am – Once I finish this scene, then it’s taco time.

11:05 am – Is that the Amazon delivery truck I hear?

11:10 am – Man, I’m glad I ordered these foam swords from Amazon. En garde!

11:15 am – Time to workout… with foam swords!

11:55 am – Is it taco time yet?

12:30 pm – Tacos!

1:00 pm – I’d better finish that scene… but I deserve a break. Think I’ll start another Fallout 4 playthrough.

1:30 pm – Dogmeat really is the best boy. Wait… is he a synth?

1:45 pm – If I lived in the Fallout universe, I’d definitely be a stealth-sniping water baron. Gimme them caps, b!#@*es!

1:50 pm – F&*%! I need to get some writing done before the fam gets home!

2:30 pm – Haven’t checked in on my author page today—let’s see what’s up.

2:35 pm – Hey look, kittehs!

3:25 pm – Man, where did the day go?

4:45 pm – Quittin’ time! Lemme check my word count…

4:46 pm – Crap.

6:00 pm – Word count goal met—woohoo! Time to cook dinner.

7:00 pm – Ooh, now that’s a cool idea… *runs to laptop to write it down*

8:00 pm – Whiskey and book time.

11:30 pm – Better get some sleep, got a lot of words to write tomorrow.

To those of you who keep buying my books, thanks for making it possible for me to do this full-time.

Honestly, there’s a lot more admin work involved in being a full-time author than I’ve let on here. I spend a few hours a day working on ads, communicating with service providers, creating marketing content, and generally doing things other than writing.

I can’t complain, though. I started working when I was 14, and I’ve always worked long hours. So, I’ll take a day in the word mines over being on my feet for ten to twelve hours straight, any day of the week.
